The End of Mr Y Part Two

Well really Part 3 to the end of the book. ;-)

1.) Even with Adam in her life, why does Ariel still feel the need to return to Patrick and 'sell' hereself to him?

2.) What does Ariel take away from her meeting with Lura - a better idea of Burlem or of Mr Y or something else altogether?

3.) Why do the KIDS appear young and without emotion?

4.) Are Burlem and Lura 'soulmates' in the 'we love each other' sense or do they simply share similar experiences?

5.) In Chapter 24 Ariel dreams of Apollos Smitheus sayins she owes him - What does she owe him? Her life? Her soul? Her academic work?

6.) Does Adam's character represent some kind of Biblical hero such as Adam of Genesis? (Maybe I am very naieve to think this.)

7.) In chapter 27, Adam tells Ariel, "We can't decide. It's not up to us. History has to make itself. And it probably will anyway, whatever we do." What does this mean to us? Is history a metaphor for God to some degree?

8.) Do Ariel and Adam every leave the Troposphere? What is there that they can't find in the real world beside each other?

9.) Is the author's use of crude language necessary to the text or is it simply there to shock us?

10.) What the heck did you make of this book? ;-)

The End of Mr Y Part 1

Hello my friends...

Here are some iquestions to get us started, thinking, discussing, etc. Of course anyone else that has questions please do post but here are some questions on Part One to Part Two which is through chapter 19. I feel like a freakin' English teacher!

1.) Why does Ariel need the book so much? Is it strictly accademic or does she have some other reason for it?

2.) Where is Professor Burlem? Is he alive or a figmanet of Ariel's immagination?

3.) How do you relate to Ariel's sense of lonlieness at her age? Is it something you can understand and is it articulated well in the text?

4.) What do you make of Patrick? Is he good for Ariel or just trouble?

5.) In chater 12 Ariel is told she has a choice as she drinks the mixture that Mr Y made. What does this mean?

6.) What did you think was going to happen? (I personally thought she was going to end up dead even though it was only a few hundred pages into the book.)

7.) What the heck is with that number thing in Chapter 12? I really didn't get it.

8.) Does the first part of the book link science and literature with ease or is there a tension between these two elements?

9.) Is the Trophesphere(sp) a state of being or a physical entity in your opinion?

10.) Does Apollo Smitheus represent something to Ariel, perhaps a father-figure she is lacking?

Right so there are some questions. If you want to start a thread on the questions let me know. I will try to finish the discussion later this weekend or tonight if all goes well.
